Project Brief

A pub located in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales Middleham.

The black bull in Middleham is a lovely place to eat, drink and stay. The new owners Harriet and Sam took over the Black bull in 2021 and wanted to refurbish the guest bedrooms to offer comfy accommodation for holiday makers visiting the Yorkshire Dales.

At Russell home interiors we were commissioned the project to renovate the 3 guest bedrooms, the clients wanted to create a nice relaxing room for guest to enjoy after a long walk in the dales or day exploring.

The rooms where completely to remodel to create the perfect place to stay, we were briefed to give the rooms a redesign to be ready for the summer season ahead.

Colour palette & Design

Each room was designed to be deciding different but also where conscious to keep a theme running throughout, our clients wanted feature walls within the rooms, and different colours throughout, but using the same fabrics and materials for curtains and cushion covers. It was very important to create a homely feel once you stepped inside the rooms.

Bedroom 1

Bedroom one, this was one of the biggest rooms out of the 3 and looks out on the Middleham, so it’s perfect when you’re waking up to see the lovely area you have come to stay, within this room the colour scheme was sapphire salute, polished pebble and a warm pewter brining real warmth into the room. Within the room there was two large windows creating lots of natural light so using a sapphire salute worked well, on the patterns I created a geometric print which was used on tie backs for the curtains, cushions, window seats and an upholstery chair brining a nice contemporary feel to the space.

At Russell home interiors we design a lot of our own fabrics which is made and sourced in the UK, so this was a great one to designs.

Bedroom 2

Panelling on the walls with proud peacock creating a warm cosy atmosphere, this bedroom really had some ‘wow’ factor about it, as soon as you walk in you see the panelling on the wall  behind the bed with bursts of proud peacock, used throughout the textiles and furnishings, bedrooms are the perfect place to create a bit of fun on the walls, this room was vibrant with colours and teamed up with walnut furnishings. In this room I added a hint of mustard running through the textiles and on the lamp shades, which created a nice glow in the room.

Bedroom 3

The family room, this was the largest room having a double bed and 1 single for families who are visiting the Dales, this room was created to have extra art work on the walls, and patterns within the rooms to create a nice family space but also to make sure it was practical, plenty of storage space and also a desk and chair, so if little one wanted to entertain themselves they could. The colour scheme within this room was a lot more Subtle yet pops of colours were created within the fabric and wall art.

Finished products…

The great thing we love about designing interiors from start to finish is having free rein on the project, we get to use a lot of our own products which are designed in house and made in Yorkshire, the black bull in Middleham, used the Quirky Cow artwork within all 3 bedrooms and had original artwork created to fit each room.

The cushions and textiles where designed bespoke to the black bull, I loved creating different patterns for each room and matching colours to walls.

Within the room the clients loved the epoxy resin but there wasn’t any room to have an epoxy resin table, so we created some epoxy resin trays to be used throughout the bedrooms and matching the handles to the colours within the rooms.

A note from the interior designer Hannah Russell

I loved working on this project, it was great to see the rooms come back to life and see how everything came together, it’s really a lovely place to stay, this project allowed me to use my creative skills and designing the fabrics to match the rooms was great!

Since finishing the project the reviews that the black bull have received has been lovely and so rewarding, I can highly recommend a visit if you’re coming to the Yorkshire Dales.
